Resolve.

It’s that time of year to set resolutions again. To resolve. Look closely at that world: resolve. To Re-solve. Solve again. Do you find yourself making the same resolution year after year?

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. If you’ve set the same goal year after year, it means that the strategies you’ve tried have not worked for you. This year do something new. Something different. Something bold. Approach your resolution from the inside out.

In order to create change in an external world the process must begin in the internal world. Imagine a computer print-out full of typos. You can take a pen and scratch out the typos and feel like you’ve made a change. But what happens when you go back to the computer and hit print? Same old, same old. Without changing the software, the typos keep showing up.

This is the missing link in the common approach to weight loss. We start by trying to create change in the physical, by taking the appropriate steps to change behavior. We eat fruits and veggies, we hit the gym hard, we chug our water. For a few days. But if the internal dialouge is self-defeating, saying quietly “Aggghhh this is hard.” “You can’t do this.” “You’ve tried and failed at this before.” Or any other unsupportive thought, guess what the print out is going to be?

You guessed it: full of typos, again.

Food For Thought:
Resolve to approach your goals from the inside out. Start by examining your core thoughts around a change you’d like to create. Can you imagine that ideal version of yourself without that snarky little voice of doubt creeping in? Creating a change in the visible requires starting with the invisible. Just like when we talking about changing cues around cravings, this takes intentional practice, motivation and support. Start this year off by breaking the insanity cycle with a new type of resolution. Resolve to think differently in order to begin acting differently.
